PolymerPaving.com (Option Quest Chemicals) offers

  • the products and the knowledge to build sustainable, eco-friendly hard driving surfaces which are easy to build and affordable.
  • long term dust control for gravel roads, haul roads and other high traffic areas

We have gone the extra step and performed complete batteries of chronic toxicity tests (in addition to acute toxicity tests) for our products, ensuring by orders of magnitude above the legal minimum requirements, that our polymer and dust control products are much safer than they need to be, for your health and also completely safe for the environment.

Our success in polymer paving starts with knowledge, develops around a proven polymer product, combines with a team that avidly studies civil engineering (road building) challenges and solutions, and ends with a finished project that lasts. It is important that you also understand the basics of geotechnical engineering, particularly the characteristics of various types of soils, how these affect your project, the importance of a good base, and the "interlocking rock" method of compaction and paving.

This "polymer on soil" procedure works on a wide variety of soils, and your chances of stellar success are greater when you understand the limitations of the existing soil (if any) and how these limitations can be overcome. Many soils will work just as they are. However, some soils may have inherent limitations that require further chemical treatment before they can serve as a solid subgrade or as a suitable hard surface aggregate. Other soils may require a mechanical modification to work as intended. In the far extremes, there are also soils that may be too expensive to fix, in which case a project should be abandoned. Knowing where you are on this scale is very important.

Two examples of extreme conditions are MUD and SAND. You can learn how to deal with these using the documentation on this website.  Muddy soil can be treated chemically (change the soil's properties) or mechanically (replace soil or add other materials to it).  Sand has a physical shortcoming but can also be treated chemically (KompaFlex MX bonds well to silicates) and also mechanically (add something that compensates for the cohesion that sand lacks, like the rock in the picture below), and any successful project will use a combination of both.

Another way to use our polymer (especially when suitable soil is not available) is to mix it into rock with a straight gradation (well mixed crushed rock particles of all sizes) with plenty of fines (rock dust). For instance, below is an application where the soil was unsuitable (contaminated) and rock had to be brought in. In USA this is called "crusher run" or "3/8 minus with 20% fines" where 3/8 inch is roughly 10mm (the largest particle size). This rock mix is easily obtained from any rock quarry mining operation and it is inexpensive. This is the rock they throw away, but precisely the kind we need for paving.

When applying KompaFlex MX polymer via spray, please read the SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) to ensure thorough
polymer penetration into the surface layer. With soils this is achieved by scarring in between spray runs. With crusher run rock
this is achieved by working in layers (compact base, spray tackifier, lay a stratum that can be penetrated by the liquid per spec,
spray polymer, add another layer of rock, spray, - until you achieve final height & OMC (minimum 4 passes) before compaction.
For instance if your engineer calls for 2 liters per m2 at 4 inches thick, you spray 0.5 liter / add 1" of rock and repeat 4 times.
Only a preliminary test can tell you the dilution rate, the OMC, and the penetration of the spray into your chosen aggregate.

We have various products which are used together (to create a hard driving surface, to create a long lasting subbase under a road surface, etc) or can be purchased separately, serving a number of industries and applications, such as:

This "polymer on soil" procedure works on a wide variety of soils, and your chances of stellar success are greater when you understand the limitations of the existing soil (if any) and how these limitations can be overcome. We offer consulting services to help mitigate some of these circumstances when possible.

We have various products which are sometimes used together (to cap surfaces, to create a hard driving surface, to create a long lasting subbase under a road surface, to create a great looking surface, etc) or separately (for instance our traffic dust control product has excellent performance but it is not to be used with our other products) in many industries and applications including:
